Apprenticeship Essentials
What Every Apprentice Should Know
Apprenticeship Standards in the UK
Apprenticeship standards in the UK continue to offer high-quality, employer-designed training tailored to real industry needs. Each standard defines the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for a specific role.
Apprentices follow a structured programme combining paid work with off-the-job training, delivered by a college, university, or training provider. From 2025, off-the-job training hours are set per standard, rather than as a percentage of working time
Programmes conclude with an End-Point Assessment (EPA)—such as a project, interview, or practical task. Under new 2025 rules, EPAs are now more flexible: some assessments can occur during the programme, and providers may support delivery where appropriate.
Successful apprentices earn a nationally recognised qualification—opening doors to further training, skilled employment, and long-term career growth. Explore the full range of apprenticeship standards Here
Off-the-Job Training (OTJ): Learning Beyond the Desk
Off-the-job training is essential to every apprenticeship, giving apprentices structured time during working hours to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) needed for their role.
As of 2025, the minimum OTJ hours are now set per apprenticeship standard, replacing the previous 6-hour weekly or 20% rule
This allows greater flexibility in how and when training is delivered, as long as it meets the minimum duration and quality requirements.
OTJ training can include:
- Classroom or online learning
- Simulations and role play
- Mentoring and shadowing
- Assignments and projects
- Training must be planned, recorded, and relevant—making apprenticeships more than just a job, but a foundation for long-term success.
This training must be planned, recorded, and relevant—and it’s a vital part of what makes apprenticeships more than just a job.
The Training Plan: The Personalised Roadmap
At the start of the apprenticeship, every learner receives a training plan—a tailored guide that outlines:
- The learning outcomes to be achieved
- How and when training will be delivered
- The roles and responsibilities of each party
It’s created collaboratively by the employer, training provider, and apprentice.
This ensures that the apprenticeship is structured, personalised, and aligned with the goals of the apprentice and the needs of the employer.
The Commitment Statement
The Apprenticeship Promise
This is the official agreement between the apprentice, employer, and training provider. It sets out:
This is the official agreement between the apprentice, employer, and training provider. It sets out:
- The responsibilities of each party
- The planned content and schedule of training
- How progress will be reviewed and supported
It’s more than paperwork—it’s a shared promise to support the apprentice’s journey from day one to success.
These regulations aren’t just rules—they’re tools for success. They ensure every apprentice gets the time, support, and structure they need to grow, thrive, and build a sustainable future.
